Professional Photographer & Adobe Certified Lightroom & Photoshop Expert Geoff Cable of the GC2 Photo Club explains F-Numbers and the Aperture Priority setting on your DSLR camera and walks you through the options for using them to obtain creative effects.
In order to use your camera creatively in any way it is higly important for you to understand Aperture and F-Numbers (Stops).
The aperture range (stepped in F-Numbers or 'Stops) available to you depends on the lens you are using. Put simply, the larger the F-Number the more light you need to get a fast shutter speed, in contrast, the lower the F-Number the less light you need for a fast shutter speed.
However, it doesn't end there. The higher the F-Number, the more of the image will be in focus from lens to subject to distant or horizon. The lower the F-Number, the less there is in focus. However, please note that the total area of focus also depends on distance the lens is away from the subject compared to the further point away from the lens (this could the horizon). This is know as 'depth of field'.
In the case of Aperture, it is important you get out there and practice, practice, practice until you completely understand the different effects a change in aperture can have.
It is essential to minimize post-shoot editing time, especially if you're a professional trying to make a profit. The less time you spend in your digital darkroom the more time you can spend on other money-making tasks.
It's amazing how many photographers we've met that have only a basic knowledge of the tools and techniques available to them when going out on a shoot. Given more of the essential knowledge every photographer has the ability to drastically reduce post editing time by using the camera and some good tricks to get more of the 'finished' image in-camera.
Getting more of the image right when you take the shot not only saves you workflow time in Lightroom or Photoshop, it also gives you that 'feel-good' sense of personal achievement and maximises your personal potential.
Here at GC2 Photo Club we like to introduce you to the little tips, tricks and workarounds that help you make the most from your camera, whether you be a Nikon or a Canon Photographer, giving you the tools to make informed decisions regarding how you plan your shoot.
Any tip or trick that introduces time-saving techniques without compromising quality is a great thing for the professional photographer and the hobby photographer alike.
