NASA has announced that the Mars Curiosity Rover has officially reached the base of Mount Sharp.
The rover started the five-mile journey to Mount Sharp more than a year ago.
Curiosity’s Twitter account posted: "I'm all about that base. Reached the base layer of Mt Sharp. New science ahead!" in a play on the lyrics to the pop song by Meghan Trainor.
Located in the Gale Crater on the surface of our neighboring red planet, Mount Sharp reaches about three and a half miles high.
There have been some issues with the Curiosity Rover, including wheels that have become worn out on the rocky surface of Mars, and critics say that the rover hasn’t done much drilling in the two years since it landed.
According to John Grotzinger from the California Institute of Technology, the rover is going to be doing “a lot more drilling” now that it has finally reached its destination.
Rocks in the layers of the mountain will give experts a picture of the environmental evolution of the red planet.
