Thirteen years after al Qaeda militants used four hijacked planes to attack the United States, the country endures without fear, President Barack Obama said Thursday (September 11) at a ceremony at the Pentagon, where one of the planes crashed and killed 184 people.

"We carry on because as Americans we do not give in to fear ever," Obama said. "Thirteen years after small and hateful minds conspired to break us, America stands tall and proud. Guided by values that sustain us, we will only grow stronger."

The hijacked plane plowed into the Pentagon at 9:37 a.m. that day. In New York City, two planes crashed into the World Trade Center's twin towers. A fourth hijacked plane crashed into a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

Nearly 3,000 people were killed.
