There are many theories surrounding the construction and use of the iconic Stonehenge monument that was built around 46 hundred years ago in the United Kingdom.

Now, experts are one step closer to understanding the mysteries of the ancient site.

Archaeologists used six different methods to scan the area below the surface, including radar and lasers.

“We got several different technologies here. We’ve got magnetometers. We’ve got ground penetrating radar. We have electromagnetic induction. We have resistance instruments also.” [LBI ArchPro/University of Birmingham]

Results of the study have allowed the researchers to create a three dimensional map that covers an area about the equivalent of 1250 football fields.

“We found about 17 new late Neolithic monuments. Monuments of the period of the great phases of Stonehenge and monuments which are like Stonehenge. Smaller in scale perhaps, but nonetheless intimately linked with the stones themselves and representing what must have been smaller ritual shrines or something of that sort.” [LBI ArchPro/University of Birmingham]

These discoveries are changing how researchers view Stonehenge, making it seem more like a spiritual community center, rather than a solitary monument that only the initiated were allowed to enter.

“Infact, in the field behind me and I’m only a short distance away from Stonehenge, one of the barriers there has been resurveyed and beneath it and surrounding it are a series of pits which look very much like a small henge as well. So even that close to Stonehenge, new things are turning up regularly.” [LBI ArchPro/University of Birmingham]
