Bolivia’s ongoing fight to regain sovereign access to its former Pacific coast lost to Chile continues as former Bolivian President Carlos Mesa, spokesperson for Bolivia’s maritime demand, embarked upon a diplomatic tour. Bolivia has an ongoing case filed with the International Court of Justice in The Hague regarding the maritime conflict with neighboring Chile. Mesa’s first stop was the United Nations, where he met with General Secretary Ban Ki Moon. Mesa said the idea of the trip is not to convince international institutions like the UN to support Bolivia, but rather to make Bolivia’s arguments known.
