STORY: North Koreans across the country marked their national day on Tuesday (September 9), the isolated state's news agency, KCNA reported.

Footage provided to Reuters by KCNA showed residents including service personnel placing flowers in front of the statues of the country's founder, Kim Il sung and late leader, Kim Jong il on Mansu Hill to mark the 66th anniversary of the founding of the nation. This footage cannot be independently verified.

North Korea is one of the world's most reclusive and repressive countries and is under heavy UN sanctions related to its nuclear and ballistic missile programs.

A nationwide famine in the 1990s killed a million North Koreans and the country's fragile economy is smaller than it was 20 years ago, according to independent estimates.

The two Koreas remain technically at war as the Korean war ended with an armistice signed at Panmumjom, rather than a peace treaty.
