Hundreds dead in floods in India and Pakistan

India has called out the military to bring much needed drinking water and other emergency supplies to victims of flooding in the northern Himalayan region of Jammu and Kashmir.

The prime ministers of India and Pakistan have offered to help each other in the flood effort in the disputed border region.

Both sides have been ravaged by heavy rains that caused rivers to burst their banks. The flooding has killed more than 200 people.

Indian helicopters and aircraft have been deployed to evacuate stranded survivors.

One man had praise for the orderly effort.

Rescue teams have also been trying to get people out of northern Pakistan.

Officials say some 700 villages in Punjab have been inundated and thousands of acres of cropland destroyed.
