The migrants, mainly from Syria and Eritrea included women and children.

Turkish officials said they rescued 385 migrants in several operations at the weekend.

Turkey is a favoured destination by those seeking a better life due to its position as a bridge from Asia to Europe as well as its wealth compared with neighbouring states.

Tens of thousands of immigrants cross Greece’s sea and land borders every year, the vast majority via Turkey.
