A meteorite landed in the Nicaraguan capital of Managua and luckily missed all people, buildings, and transportation hubs.
A meteorite is believed to have landed in the crowded Nicaraguan capital of Managua and incredibly missed hitting any people or buildings, despite landing near the international airport.
The alleged space rock struck an uninhabited wooded area not far from the airport and an air force base.
The crater left behind by the impact is over 15 feet deep and 40 feet wide.
Oddly, locals interviewed didn’t report seeing it streaking through the sky, but many said they heard a very loud boom.
Some reported that there was a burning smell and others said they felt tremors.
One person commented that he initially thought that a bomb had exploded nearby.
Officials have since secured the area and a spokesperson for Nicaragua’s government said that the country plans to contact experts from the US Geological Survey for information.
At this point it’s believed that the meteorite was a piece of rock that broke off of a passing asteroid.
It’s been confirmed that a recently discovered asteroid about the size of a house was flying past Earth around the time of impact.
Those who have examined the scene say they don’t really know what happened to the fallen object itself.
Top theories are that it either disintegrated or buried itself below the Earth’s surface.
