[] Imagine your friend has 4 dimensions he can travel to. He's standing in the room, right in the middle, under your lamp, 1 meter below it, 2 meters from the door, 2 meters from the walls on both sides.
So you'd estimate he's 3 meters or so away from you, assuming you're in the corner of the room.
4th dimension would mean he could get further away from you than that 3m(but not closer), while remaining 2m in front of the door, 2m sideways from side walls, and 1m below the lamp.
Think of it like paper. You draw a point on paper, and another point. On two dimensions, their distance is set in stone. But if you elevate other point in third dimension, you can make it go further away while its 2d position remains the same. Your friend similarly could disappear into distance while kinda remaining still.
How quantum physics and string theory get away with this is that(I'm no expert, so feel free to correct this part), they claim extra dimensions are small. You don't have much wiggle room in those directions, so you can't escape into distance. There's less than atoms width worth of room to move there, so you couldn't get even atoms width worth of extra distance no matter how you move in these extra dimensions. So we can't really notice them.
Extra dimension is also a name used for "parallel universe". I have no idea why they're called dimensions. It's entirely unrelated concept mostly used in scifi and fantasy novels. It's not really related to anything scientific, just a cool name for fun thing to use in fictional stories.
