[]Over-saturation. Same thing happened to medical imaging. I have been in medical imaging since 1993. We have a trade skill magazine called advanced. It used to have a good 5 pages of classifieds for job openings in every state. Tons of jobs.
Schools saw this as an opportunity and opened up programs. Flooded the market with new technologists which also drove down wages. Too many qualified people for not enough jobs. The jobs did not disappear. There are more jobs, just too many people.

The research methods sections in a lot of papers are so flawed that the science can't be replicated.
If you try to validate a paper, you don't get grant money to do it anyway.
Regardless, so many papers I've reviewed fell apart when I tried to replicate them. It's insane.
