There is a possibility that the border between Scotland and England could take on a much greater significance in ten days’ time. Scots go to the polls on September 18 to decide whether on not to leave the United Kingdom and become an independent nation.
The British government went back to work on Monday morning knowing that for the first time a well-respected company’s latest opinion poll put the pro-independence Yes campaign slightly in the lead.
“If people in Scotland want the substantial powers to protect our public services, create jobs, make sure we don’t end up with Tory governments we don’t vote for, then the only way to guarantee that is to vote yes”, said Scottish Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.
But Alistair Darling, the man leading the No campaign to preserve the union, still thinks his country will steer clear from a road of no return.
“This is forever. If we decide to leave there is no going back, and I think as people concentrate and look at the issues at stake over the next ten days…I am increasingly confident that we will win”.
At the launch of campaigning the polls had the pro-union vote around 20 percent in the lead. There seems little doubt that that margin has narrowed considerably.
