SOT, Alexei, Russian volunteer in Eastern Ukraine (in Russian): “I came here after two events that had taken place. The first one is what happened in Odessa when people were burnt alive. The second is that St. George ribbons were torn off veterans on Victory Day. I was very outraged by that.”

SOT, Alexei, Russian volunteer in Eastern Ukraine (in Russian): “No, we are here as volunteers. We are not getting paid for this at all. Moreover all of my uniform and equipment I bought myself. Here [in Donetsk] I was given only weapons and ammunition.”

SOT, Alexei, Russian volunteer in Eastern Ukraine (in Russian): “Most often civilians are the victims here. Women, the elderly and children who were unable for some reason to leave the place. The Ukrainian troops are purposefully using heavy artillery against residential areas. They are destroying infrastructure, electric stations, kindergartens and schools.”

Russian men who have volunteered to join anti-Kiev militias in Eastern Ukraine spoke out about their reasons for fighting in Donetsk, Thursday.

Volunteer Alexei explained that none of the men are receiving payment for their service and that he had only been given weapons and ammunition. He stated the fire in the Odessa Trade Unions building on May 2 as an important trigger to his decision to join the militia. He further condemned the Ukrainian military’s actions against residential areas, still inhabited by women, elderly and children.

The ranks of the anti-Kiev militias in Eastern Ukraine have been bolstered by thousands of volunteers from Russia. The chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Donetsk People’s Republic Aleksandr Zakharchenko estimated that they are between 3,000 and 4,000.
