Pakistan’s state TV channel has started broadcasting again after a crowd of protesters stormed the building and took the station off air.
Soldiers and paramilitary forces entered the PTV headquarters in Islamabad on Monday, September 1, to remove the demonstrators.
Fresh clashes erupted earlier in the day as thousands marched on government buildings in the capital, demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. Protesters were seen trying to break through police lines and push their way to Sharif’s residence as well as a number of federal buildings.
In response, police are said to have fired tear gas, but also reportedly showed restraint as the rallies became more violent.
Peaceful protests began last month, led by cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan and cleric Tahir ul-Qadri, who both say the 2013 election was rigged in Sharif’s favour.
The demonstrations turned deadly over the last weekend of August, when at least three people were killed in clashes with security forces.
