For women who are in the final months of pregnancy, making travel plans is a gamble. An expectant mother onboard a Delta airlines flight from Amsterdam to Atlanta recently went into labor on the plane.

The aircraft, which was carrying 230 passengers and crew, was forced to make an emergency landing in Ireland. It had been flying over Blackpool, England when airline staffers declared a medical emergency.

The crew feared the woman would give birth mid-flight, as her contractions were getting ‘closer’ during the journey. Right before the plane touched ground, her contractions were about a minute apart.

The plane landed safely at Shannon Airport, where paramedics were waiting to check her over. After that, she was transported to a local university hospital by ambulance.

The woman, who was almost full term, gave birth shortly after she arrived at the facility. Both mom and baby are said to be doing fine.

Many airlines require a doctor’s note to allow pregnant woman within four weeks of their due date to travel. Delta does not need any medical certification for them to fly. However, the airline does advise expectant moms talk to their doctors before hopping on a plane.
