Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe visited Hiroshima on Monday (25 August) after a series of landslides devastated the city.
At least 52 people were killed and 28 remain missing, according to local police.
At an evacuation centre, survivors told Abe about what they had been through.
“I was covered in mud. The whole of my two-storey house was washed away and my wife died. I feel so much regret that I wasn’t able to save her,” an elderly man told the premier.
Parts of northern Hiroshima were engulfed when steep hillsides, saturated by rain, gave way early on Wednesday (20 August).
Abe said the government was looking into ways to better deal with landslide risks.
