A SpaceX rocket exploded in mid-air early Friday evening.

The unmanned rocket exploded shortly after launch around 5:45 p.m. during a test flight at the SpaceX testing facility in McGregor.

According to a statement from the company, no injuries were reported.

Witnesses reported several grass fires start from falling debris, but none of the fires were reported to be serious in nature.

The statement from SpaceX goes on to say that the test flight involved a three-engine version of its reusable Falcon 9 rocket.

It says an "anomaly" was detected and that the rocket self-destructed, as it is designed to do.

The rocket stayed in the designated testing area during the explosion and a representative from the Federal Aviation Administration was present during the testing.

No other information about the explosion was immediately made available.
