Lecture 1 - Why Elephants Can't Dance
How strong is a leaf-cutting ant? And why didn't the queen ant get an invitation to the Christmas lectures?
The ants had arrived on the Saturday and we were getting them settled in their temporary home before filming. We'd taken over a room in the Davy Faraday Laboratory (in the upstairs of the RI) because the rooms there are temperature controlled and we needed to keep the ants nice and warm against the freezing weather outside. The freezing weather meant that finding fresh leaves for them to cut was a challenge, we soon discovered that the ants much preferred cutting up rose leaves to bramble leaves.
