Obama condemns killers of James Foley, pledges vigilance in protecting Americans

U.S. President Barack Obama on Wednesday (August 20) condemned the beheading of American journalist James Foley in revenge for U.S. air strikes in Iraq, and put out a stern warning to Islamic State militants.

"The United States of America will continue to do what we must do to protect our people. We will be vigilant and we will be relentless. When people harm Americans anywhere, we do what's necessary to see that justice is done. And we act against ISIL, standing along side others," Obama said.

The video posted by Islamic State militants showing the beheading of Foley, prompted widespread revulsion that analysts say could push Western powers into further action against the group.

The video, titled "A Message To America," also showed images of another U.S. journalist, Steven Sotloff, whose future Islamic State says now depends on how the United States acts in Iraq.
