On Thursday, a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO Berlinetta sold at the Bonhams Quail Lodge Auction in California for $38.1 million.

The car is rare, being one of 36 that were made between the years of 1961 and 1964. Even though it sold for an astounding amount, the winning bid actually fell short of expectations prior to the start of the auction.

Experts believe the unique vehicle had the potential to sell for upwards of $50 million. Regardless of the slight setback, the selling price makes the vintage auto a winner, as it is now reportedly the most expensive car ever sold at auction.

The Ferrari's final sum surpassed the previous record winning bid for a 1954 Mercedes vehicle that sold last year for $29.7 million. The 250 GTO Berlinetta is a highly sought after model.

Another Ferrari 250 GTO reportedly sold last year in a private sale for $52 million. Bonhams beauty was one of the earlier models which had been owned by Italian amateur driver, Fabrizio Violati, who passed away in 2010.
