Hundreds of mourners have attended the funeral of Italian journalist Simone Camilli, killed in Gaza after an Israeli shell exploded while being diffused.

Five others lost their lives in the tragedy.

The 35-year-old father of one was laid to rest in his hometown of Pitigliano in the Tuscan hills.

Camilli was working for the Associated Press at the time of his death.

Associated Press president Gary Pruitt paid tribute: “ I didn’t know Simone well enough, bit I can tell you from seeing his work, I think he would want his efforts to continue, to tell the human side of the story in war.”

His body arrived in the Italian capital, Rome, from Israel and was greeted at the airport by Italian Foreign Minister Federica Mogherini.

He was then transported to his final resting place in Tuscany.
