Abandoned Lesser Flamingo nests - very sad!

2014-08-13 88

An entire breeding season has been lost for them - those that survived the pre-existing threats from dog killings and electrical wire electrocutions!

The Phoenicopterous minor or Lesser Flamingo is a species in the Flamingo family of birds found in the Little Rann of Kutch. They are classified as near -- threatened. The reason is that they are declining in population and have very few breeding sites. Human activities are a major reason for the slow but sure disappearance of flamingos in India.

This very poignant video shows one such breeding site in the Little Rann of Kutch filmed in January-February 2012. The previous year's monsoon was inadequate and the water in this particular breeding site dried up much sooner than anticipated. Due to this, the flamingos were forced to abandon their nests and fly elsewhere. Had they stayed on, their chicks would not have had any water for protection around their nests, there would have been no feeding grounds and the salt industry would have quickly claimed the grounds for their work.

Having missed a full breeding season, the number of Lesser Flamingos would decline considerably next year, as they would have to put in the same energy into breeding and their numbers would already have been reduced by attacks from village dogs and the constant threat of electrocution in overhead live electrical cables - a threat that is ongoing at many of the wetlands in Gujarat.
