Salt packing and adding Iodine in the Little Rann of Kutch

2014-08-13 22

How salt is packaged and sold: Semi-mechanised improvised salt packing in the Little Rann of Kutch, with tractors and trucks combined with manual labour, as well as sieves, carts and trolleys. Meanwhile, a mountain of salt bags pile up at the distribution end...

Shown here is a part of the salt packing process of Keedi Village in the Little Rann of Kutch. Workers are adding Iodine (in order to make the sale iodised) and packing salt in bags to be sent to different countries.

The salt workers settle down in the desert for 8 months between October to May and their homes adjacent to the salt pans that they work on. On reaching the school, one can see a number of temporary homes in the horizon where the Agariya families reside.
