The largest compound of prisons in South Asia, Tihar Jail is also known as Tihar and has a brand of their own by the name of TJ's! It is located around 7 km away from Chanakya Puri, west of New Delhi, India at Tihar village. The nearby area is called Hari Nagar. It is not just a prison but also a Correctional Institution. Its main objective is to provide useful skills, and educate the inhabitants so as to make them normal members of society. The prison is meant to strengthen the inmates' desire to improve by boosting their self esteem.
The inmates also manufacture products under the brand name of Tihar or TJ's. It was run by the State of Punjab until 1966 and was a maximum security prison but later the control was transferred to National Capital Territory of Delhi. Additional facilities were constructed in 1984 and it became the Tihar Prison.
The most liked Inspector General of the Tihar was Kiran Bedi who under her jurisdiction introduced a number of prison reforms, including changing the name to Tihar Ashram. Vipassana, a meditation program for both staff and inmates was also initiated by her. The Prison has yielded an inmate who has passed the Indian Administrative Service civil service examinations.
