Arunachal Pradesh, a mysterious, magical and mystical land tucked away in the north eastern tip of India is one of the most compelling holiday destinations in India. This remotest outpost of the North Eastern states entices the adventurer with its picturesque moutain peaks, swift rivers and verdant valleys. Itanagar is the capital of the state. However the ownership of Arunachal Pradesh is under dispute. China claims that it is part of Tibet.
Arunachal Pradesh means "land of the dawn-lit mountains". Literally it means "land of the rising sun" (Sanskrit: Arun: Sun,Pradesh: state, province or region) in reference to its position as the easternmost state of India. It is also known as the "Orchid State of India" and the "Paradise of the Botanists". It is the biggest among the group of eastern states which are commonly known as Seven Sisters.
Arunachal Pradesh is considered to be the "nature's treasure trove"and home to orchids, known for their exquisitely beautiful blooms, from one of the dominant taxa with more than six hundred species, occurring in varying elevations and climatic conditions throughout the state. Nature has provided the people with a deep sense of beauty which finds delightful expression in their songs, dances and crafts. The climate varies from hot and humid to heavy rainfall in the lower range. It becomes progressively cold as one moves northwards to higher altitudes.
Trees of great size, plentiful climbers and abundance of cane and bamboo make Arunachal evergreen. The staple food is rice along with fish, meat and lots of green vegetables. Different varieties of rice are available. Lettuce is the most common and preferred vegetable of all, prepared by boiling it with ginger, coriander and green chillies. Boiled rice cakes wrapped in leaves is a famous snack.
Fruits like oranges and pineapples grow well and have found their to the urban tables in their processed avatar. During the harvest season, one would see truckloads of ripe fruit making their way out of the many orchards spread out across the orange belt of the State.
