2014-08-12 8

Skulls and bones sit on dirty ice at the edge of the high altitude glacial tarn of Roopkund, at the edge of the Nanda Devi Sanctuary in Garhwal, Uttarakhand.

Roopkund trek. The tarn of Rupkund lies at a high altitude, in the shadow of Nanda Devi, and is the target of the Nanda Devi Raj Jat Yatra that takes place once every twelve years. Several skulls, bones and skeletons can be seen by the side of this Himalayan tarn, a mystery that has been must speculated upon but not cracked...

Are these the remains of General Zorawar Singh's army - felled by the deadly Nightshare or belladonna plant, a large gathering of pilgrims killed in an avalanche or rockfall, or something else? Perhaps we will never know!
