Govinda Sport has its origins in the 'Dahi Handi' (Dahi-Curd, Handi-Earthen Pot) festival which is very popular in the Maharashtra state of India.
'Dahi Handi' is an Indian festival that comprises of making Human Pyramid and breaking the hung Earthen Pot (Handi/Matki) organized on Lord Krishna Janmashtami every year to celebrate the birth of the Lord Shri Krishna all over the state of Maharashtra, India. The Earthen Pot is filled with Milk, Curd, Butter, Fruits and Water.

The term Govinda is used for people who participate in this Human Pyramid forming activity. The participants form a Human Pyramid as high as 9-tier in one go and are given three attempts to break the earthen pot.

Every year there are around lakhs of thousands of audience gathered at Mumbai and Thane cities' big 'Dahi Handi' events. The prize money for 'Dahi Handi' events usually ranges between Rs.1 lakh-2 crore (Indian Rupees) depending upon the organizers and its sponsors.
