The Chothe tribe is one of the Old Kuki group of clans of the Kuki people found in some parts of Manipur, India. Some historians and anthropologists had recorded them as "Purums" which is a misnomer. At times the Chothe have been confused with the Purum of India.
Gangte is one of the Kuki tribes of Northeast India with a population of 15,100 (as of 2001),[2] primarily in Manipur's southern district (Churachandpur) and neighbouring States of Meghalaya, Mizoram and Assam. Though nationally "Indian," this tribe displays East Asian-type features. They are considered part of the Chin-Kuki-Mizo community. Other clans or ethnic people in this group are the Thadou (Kuki), Hmar, Lushai (Mizo), Paite, Simte, Vaiphei, and Zou.
Gangte is also the name of the language spoken by the Gangte people of northeast India, one of the northern Kukish languages of the Tibeto-Burman family.
