Collared Pygmy Owlet on a Quercus oak tree in Landour, Uttarakhand. 6th February, 2014.
Glaucidium brodiei resides across the Himalaya and north-east India. it is really tiny and barred heavily. It has a spotted crown, with streaking on the flanks and an owl-faced pattern on the upper mantle (visible as eyes behind the head). Found in temperature and sub-tropical forests, for the most part.
The call - a four note whistle with a quicker middle two notes is one that we often hear, whistle back and get a response for!
Collared Pygmy Owl, Collared Pygmy-Owl, Collared Pygmy Owlet, Collared Pygmy-Owlet, Banded Owl
Bird Family : Strigidae - Typical owls
Bird Group : STRIGIFORMES
Red Data Status : Least Concern
Remarks : The false or occipital face of the smallest of owls of our subcontinent. Perched atop an Indian Oak tree, he was mobbed by the mighty and dainty hunters: Black-throated Tits Aegithalos concinnus, Green-backed Tits (Parus monticolus), Yellow-browed Tits Sylviparus modestus, Lemon-rumped warblers Phylloscopus chloronotus, White-tailed Nuthatches Sitta himalayaensis, Bar-tailed Treecreepers Certhia himalayana and the Black-chinned Babblers Stachyridopsis chrysaea. The dissonance was overwhelming, and their attitude truly aggressive, but the question is whether mobbing by these tiny birds puts them to greater risk of predation or is their safety in numbers?
