Sea food on sale- Fort Cochin

2014-08-12 50

Sea food like Tiger prawns, small prawns, lobster, etc are on sale.

The fish market is at the very end, along the row of the Chinese fishing nets. You can buy the freshly caught fish and then walk a short distance to find a restaurant which will cook it for you. The catch may feature sardine, mackerel, pomfret, mullet, seer fish, prawn and mussels, among other varieties.

Fishermen also arrive in the morning, with their catch from the Arabian Sea. If you are in luck, they may bring lobster, crabs and tuna. So if you want fresh fish, this is where you have to be at around 8:00 AM.

Fish are sold piece by piece to the customer who shouts out the best offer. If you have your eye on a particular fish, be alert and ready to make the best offer.

Even if you arrive a little late, you can still buy fish. Just be careful and pick the best one. If there are too many flies buzzing around, or if they feel stiff and smell really fishy, it means that the fish have begun to rot. Buy supple, clean-smelling, shiny-eyed fish which have been put on ice, and you won't go wrong.

The fish market is an amazing place. It is very colorful, and of course it smells a little fishy, but it's a small price to pay for an enjoyable walk around the place. You can sit on a terrace, sip on a glass of fresh mango juice and just enjoy wind, the gorgeous Chinese fishing nets, and the dolphins swimming in the sea just a few meters away. You will also find an artisan market nearby where you will find wood jewelry, clothes and other knick-knacks.

Ideally, the market is a place you must visit during the morning, when it's not too hot. Even a little late in the day, there's not much cause for concern because there is plenty of shade everywhere. So, put some sunscreen on, and go enjoy the Kochi fish market.
