Himalayan Pied Woodpecker pecking into pine cones in the Himalaya

2014-08-12 46

Himalayan Woodpecker (Dendrocopos himalayensis) in Garhwal, Uttarakhand.

How often does one see a Woodpecker pecking into a pine cone? Is it looking for insects drawn to the sap or is it eating the chilgoza pine seeds themselves? We filmed this on the way back from Gangotri to Uttarakashi, along the Ganga river valley. There was a rock-fall landslide that blocked the road so we used our spare time to film this chap, as we waited for the road to clear!
