Melam or Mathalam is the common name for percussion instruments that are unique to Tamil Nadu, Kerala and parts of South India.

The famous Thrissur Pooram festival is one of the most colourful and spectacular public festivals of Kerala, which has great public participation.

It is held at the Vadakkunnathan Temple in Thrissur town every year on the 'Pooram' , day of the Malayalam Calendar month of 'Medam'. 'Pooram' day is the day when the moon rises with the Pooram star.
