Heavy flooding in Detroit causes chaos on the roads

Motorists were stranded in Detroit in the United States after almost 12 centimetres of rain fell in just one day.

Some of the heaviest rain came during the afternoon rush hour with more than 3 centimetres in 24 minutes recorded at Detroit’s Airport

The deluge caused flash floods on the roads. Many drivers unsuspectingly drove into flooded underpasses, with cars suddenly submerged up to their rooves.

At least five major motorways running through the city had stretched that were completely blocked by floodwaters as well as smaller streets in the centre and the suburbs.

It’s the second heaviest rainfall ever recorded in the city – the last was in 1925.
