STORY: The all-star cast of "The Giver" celebrated the film's opening in New York on Monday (August 11).
Acting veterans such as Meryl Streep and Jeff Bridges share the big screen with newbies Taylor Swift, Brenton Thwaites and Odeya Rush in the film inspired by the classic novel of the same name.
Bridges, who plays the giver, has been working to bring the project to theater-goers for roughly 18 years with author Lois Lowry.
"I wrote the book 20 years ago, two years after that Jeff Bridges came to me and said 'let's make a movie.' And I was naïve, I thought that would happen right away, I think he thought so too, but of course it didn't. And actually it's probably a good thing it took so long because everything fell into place. And for one thing he got old enough to play the title role and he's wonderful in it," explained Lowry.
