Cat owners in Port St. Lucie, Florida are breathing easier because a massive python has been caught. The snake reportedly ate a number of felines in the area.

On Friday, August 8th, a local police officer was dispatched to a residential neighborhood after residents reported seeing the large python. When Sergeant John Holman arrived on scene, he found a dead cat in an empty lot.

Holman explored in some nearby brush and soon located the snake which measured roughly 12 feet long and weighed about 120 pounds. Holman remarked “Once I saw the size of it, I called for a few more officers."

After radioing in for backup, the cops were able to pull the slithery beast out of the brush. The snake is a Burmese python, which is a species that is banned in the state.

Holman located a licensed party who is permitted with Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to take the python in.

There have been a number of reports pertaining to missing cats in the neighborhood where the snake was captured. Police have confirmed they believe the python is responsible for eating them.
