Afghanistan’s feuding presidential candidates – Ashraf Ghani and Abdullah Abdullah – have in agreed in writing to work together to form a unity government.
It came after meetings with US Secretary of State John Kerry.
They now have to come up with an electoral plan, including a date for the next president’s inauguration.
“This communique reflects our sense of national obligations and our duty to put the interests of Afghanistan, every child, every women, every man above everything else,” said Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai at a news conference.
Abdullah has complained of widespread
fraud during a run-off election held in June.
The UN is supervising a full recount of all eight million votes. The audit has been beset by delays and haggling, increasing the level of mistrust between the two camps.
Afghanistan’s Western backers hope the recount will produce a legitimate president before a NATO summit in early September.
