Scores killed in Chinese earthquake

Hundreds are feared among the dead and missing after a 6.3 magnitude earthquake shook southwest China.

Chinese State TV shows footage of the rescue operation as members of the military dig through piles of dirt and cement for any sign of life.

At least one school collapsed during the earthquake, and some 12,000 homes reduced to rubble, the Chinese Xinhua news agency reported. Electricity was cut in the area.

The quake registered at the shallow depth of less than 1 mile, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake, whose epicenter hit the mountainous Ludian county, is regularly hit by quakes.

In 1974, more than 1,400 people were killed when an earthquake struck the same region.
