A truck carrying a load of fruit from Mexico to Oakland, California crashed, and animals at the Oakland Zoo were treated to a taste of the cargo.

No one was hurt in the crash. Up to 60 thousand pounds of tropical fruit was spilled onto the road.

Around 12 thousand pounds of it was destroyed, however over ten thousand pounds of plantains and jackfruit were given to animals at the Oakland Zoo.

Some of the animals got to experience their first taste of tropical fruit varieties, including an elephant that tried some jackfruit for the first time.

According to zoological manager Darren Minier: “We don't want to give our animals too much of a good thing, but if we freeze it we will be able to use it through winter. What fruit is left could be frozen for jackfruit Popsicles.”

The fruit was given to bears, giraffes, and elephants, but zoo employees said that some of the animals were reluctant to try the new kinds of fruit.
