People around the world recently had the privilege of watching baby loggerhead sea turtles hatch in real-time thanks to a live-streaming camera.

The babies were born on Friday, July 25, at a little before 9 p.m.

Once they greeted the world, the tiny creatures that measured about 3-inches long crawled out of their hole or nest together. After they made it onto stable ground, the turtles headed to the Atlantic ocean.

The webcam was focused on the nest in Florida’s Lower Keys about two weeks prior to their births. The footage is part of an ongoing campaign in the local area to raise awareness about the protection that sea turtles need.

The device only used infrared light so it wouldn’t confuse the hatchlings.

“It so important here in the Keys to protect these nests and these turtles. They’ve been around for millions, maybe hundreds of millions of years.” [Via CNN]

The president of the Save-a-Turtle organization, Harry Appel explained “This webcam is high-definition , the first time ever used to record a turtle hatch, and also an infrared IR-emitting light that is so important because it does not disturb any of the activities of the turtle trying to find the ambient light of the moon.”

The Save-a-Turtle agency worked on the webcam project in collaboration with the Florida Keys tourism council.
