Now that the Netflix series ‘Orange is the New Black’ has made orange, well…the new black, a Michigan jail has reverted to using old school striped jumpsuits.
Said the Saginaw County Sheriff, “…some people think it's cool to look like an inmate of the Saginaw County Jail with wearing all orange jumpsuits out at the mall or in public. It's a concern because we do have our inmates out sometimes doing work in the public, and I don't want anyone to confuse them or have them walk away."
Black and white horizontal stripes were chosen in part because they immediately signify ‘inmate’ and also because they’re not particularly trendy on the outside.
The cost and quality of them are said to be the same as the orange ones. What they’re missing is the pop culture caché that the bright, solid garment has gained.
It’s estimated that the changeover will be complete by the end of the year.
Several inhabitants of the Saginaw County Jail have expressed their distaste for the new garb, saying they don’t like to wear the stripes.
To that the Sheriff often responds, ‘Too bad. Don’t come to jail’.
