Fireworks lit up the Paris skyline on Monday (July 14) in honor of the French National Bastille Day.

Celebrations are held on July 14 across France every year to mark the storming of France's most notorious prison at the beginning of the 1789 revolution, which saw the French Queen, Marie Antoinette and hundreds of others guillotined in the Place de la Concorde square -- then known as Place de la Revolution.

This year's Bastille Day also commemorated the centenary of World War One.

Earlier in the day, French and foreign troops marched down the famous Paris avenue, the Champs Elysee, in a traditional military parade.
