U.S. Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl is returning to active duty.

The former prisoner of war has been assigned to work at the Army North headquarters at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas.

The Defense Department says Bergdahl has completed therapy and counseling following his return from captivity in Afghanistan.

Bergdahl was released in May after five years as a Taliban prisoner of war.

The Army is still investigating the circumstances surrounding his disappearance. Fellow soldiers claim he abandoned his post.

Bergdahl was rescued in exchange for five Taliban detainees held at Guantanamo Bay.

His release sparking controversy over whether the prisoner swap should have happened.
