The Ukrainian army is tightening its grip on Donetsk, eastern Ukraine's largest city.

They are moving forces closer to the city setting up a new checkpoint.

The hope is to cut off weapon and ammunition supplies to pro-Russian separatists.

They are setting up tents and digging trenches. They are testing military vehicles.

They hope fighting is entering the final stage.

"I am ready to fight till the end along with my friends in order for all of this to come to an end as soon as possible. I want my nephews to be able to walk through this land without trouble."

The Ukrainian military says it has a plan to deliver a "nasty surprise" to separatists dug in in Donetsk.

In a phone call, Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko told the U.S. Vice President that separatists have refused multiple offers to negotiate a ceasefire.
