A 12-year-old girl will soon be living a normal life. In April, a plastic surgeon shaped Charlotte Ponce's new ear. The cartilage had been taken from her ribs and the entire ear was implanted on her arm.

For the past several months, the skin grew and formed into a perfectly shaped ear. An eight-hour operation is scheduled for today at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak to move the ear from her arm to the right side of her head.

Charlotte was mauled by a pet raccoon when she was only a baby. The animal ate away her nose, parts of her lips, cheekbones and her right ear. Following the mauling, Charlotte’s cheeks, nose and lips were rebuilt.

The ear surgery is the latest procedure. Charlotte will spend about a week in the hospital after the ear is moved to recover.
