ANTI-HAZING CAMPAIGN IN THE PHILIPPINES
Web users in the Philippines have been left shocked and saddened by the story of 18 year old Guillo Servando, who died on Saturday in a suspected fraternity initiation hazing at a Manila university. The tragedy has been met with widespread commentary across the Philippines where a growing number of web users are now calling for an end to this fraternity and sorority related violence.
Scores have taken to social networks since Saturday calling for the abolition of hazing which is tolerated by the authorities despite its potentially grave consequences. Many have been posting under the #EndFraternityRelatedViolence hashtag, and demonstrators have taken the same slogan to the streets of the capital over the past few days to voice their opposition to hazing and pay tribute to Guillo Servando.
Anti-hazing activists now hope the justice system will come down heavily on those responsible for Guillo Servando`s death and hope their campaigning will help raise public awareness of the dangers of hazing. Their hopes may soon become reality as several lawmakers in the Philippines have said they want to toughen legislation on these student initiation rituals in universities…
