Thousands of Belgium fans in Brussels have celebrated their team’s victory against the United States in the World Cup round of 16.

Also known as the Red Devils, Belgium beat the US 2-1 after extra time.

They will now face Argentina in the quarter finals on Saturday.

Meanwhile, across the Atlantic in Washington DC the atmosphere was a lot more sombre.

Thousands of fans gathered at the city’s Freedom Plaza near the White House to watch the match.

“I’m a little disappointed (sighs). I guess I’m a little sad,” said one woman.

Stefan Grobe, euronews correspondent in Washington:

“Belgium was the last stop on this terrific journey of Team USA in Brazil. Now the party is over – but maybe not the enthusiasm for football.”
