U.S. President Barack Obama offered condolences on Monday (June 30) to Chilean President Michelle Bachelet for Chile's loss to Brazil in the World Cup.
"I know it was a tough loss, but it also showed the incredible skill and talent of the Chilean team. This is as well, I think, as it has ever done against a very tough Brazilian team on their home turf, and so congratulations to them," Obama said, noting that the United States also faces a tough match upcoming against Belgium.
Chile tied Brazil, 1 to 1, through 30 minutes of extra time but lost in a shootout.
Perhaps to get her mind off the subject, Bachelet stuck to the usual diplomatic script in an Oval Office photo opportunity. She noted the deep ties between their two countries, and said greater cooperation in the areas of education, science and technology would enhance that relationship.
