‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ sees humans and apes battling it out for control of planet earth.
The film features chimps speaking and riding horses, but according to director Matt Reeves ‘Dawn of the Plant of the Apes’ contains a deeper message: “I think the similarity between the apes and the humans is that both sides are grappling with their own nature and they’re both grappling with their impulsive, animalistic, violent side and the other part of them that is capable of empathy and connection and that is really the human condition.”
British actors Andy Serkis plays the leader of the apes and Gary Oldman leads the humans.
Andy Serkis expanded on the ‘can’t we all get along’ theme: “This movie is all about empathy and understanding the other. Caesar, the leader of the apes, is an outsider to both worlds, to both species and is placed in a position of trying to avoid conflict. I do think it’s a movie for our times. I think it’s against any form of fundamentalism or absolutism.”
Talking about the eighth film in the franchise that began in 1968, Gary Oldman added: “I think it’s great that we’ve got a movie in which we’re not fighting robots or dinosaurs, we’re so very close to it.”
