Crowding the streets outside the city hall in Sarajevo, people were treated to a concert to commemorate the event which triggered the First World War.

It is the same hall where Archduke Franz Ferdinand attended a reception 100 years ago to this day, before being fatally shot by Gavrilo Princip.

He was a member of a revolutionary group hoping to emancipate the country from imperial rule, 100 years later Austrians provided the music rather than military.

The concert concluded with the European hymn, Beethoven’s ‘Ode of Joy’.

The event aimed to send a message of unity to a country divided by bloody conflicts during the twentieth century which cost tens of millions of lives.
