Taliban battle Afghan forces for control of southern district

Afghan security forces head into the fight in Helmand Province.

The Taliban launched its summer offensive in the middle of May and has ramped up attacks across the country.

This week the focus is on Helmand province.

(SOUNDBITE) (Pashto) PROVINCIAL POLICE CHIEF OF HELMAND, ABDUL QAYUM BAQIZOY, SAYING:

"Our Afghan security forces are battling with the insurgents in four districts of Helmand after they carried out attacks against our security forces. So far the enemies have suffered big casualties and the war is still ongoing."

Security is tight with authorities saying that at least 13 policemen, eight army soldiers and 100 Taliban fighters have been killed in five days of fighting.
